NUS is a confederation of 600 students’ unions working in both higher and further education, which makes us a great central hub for sharing ideas and experiences right across the UK. Students and students’ unions often face similar issues, whether they are located in Southampton or Scunthorpe, and if someone has had a moment of genius for a campaign it is great to share that.
This is where the student movement builds its solidarity through campaigns on a local level.
We have compiled a short list of proven ‘top tips’ from the last twelve months, all described by you for you – the FE & HE student officer and staff team of 2010-11.
Lesson Learned: Create visual elements.
Lesson Learned: Support the visuals with street teams.
Lesson Learned: Value your volunteers.
Lesson Learned: Has this been successful before?
Lesson Learned: Have a strong campaign plan.
Lesson Learned. Target your communication.
NUS also learns a lot from acting as a best practice hub, including the suggestion from Laura that if a national event were to go ahead next year she thinks it would be beneficial to see a central north west working group. A good idea Helen and Ben shared was having a ‘call centre’ based in their unions when students were at a national event so they could promote one phone number in case any one had questions or got in to trouble, this may be something NUS could support during future national events.
Share your experiences with the rest of the UK by emailing in your reflection of the last twelve months to campaigns@nus.org.uk. Don’t forget to include your best tips and some ideas of what you would do differently if you were to run a campaign again.
