The Commission said 50,000 registration forms were downloaded from its website on Tuesday, ahead of the 1700 BST deadline to get them to a person's local authority. 40% of all those visiting the About My Vote website were young people aged 18 to 25.
"We're especially pleased that so many of the visits were from people aged under 25, who are one of the age groups least likely to be registered to vote," said spokeswoman for the commission.
Sheffield Hallam, Liverpool Guild and Northumbria Students' Union amongst others handed in hundreds of registration forms from their students in advance of the deadline yesterday.
Susan Nash, NUS Vice President Society and Citizenship, said "Students' unions up and down the country have been working hard to register students so come 6 May, the student vote can be decisive. Politicians need to be clear about where they stand on student issues especially if they are committed to NUS' pledge."
Anyone who did not register to vote with their council by Tuesday evening will not be able to cast their ballot on 6 May.
Tuesday, 20 April was also the deadline for people wishing to apply for a postal vote.
Although the general deadline for proxy vote applications is 27 April, if someone is suddenly incapacitated or taken ill, he or she can apply to vote by emergency proxy for medical reasons up until 5pm on polling day.
