Introducing Stuart the new FE Project Officer at NUS Wales

My role is to develop a whole college approach to learner involvement in FE colleges throughout Wales, to establish the Welsh Assembly Government's Learner Involvement Strategy guidance for post 16 learning.

This project puts the learner voice at the heart of the student experience and is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government.  It focuses on

  • Providing student governor training to all student governors in Wales (in conjunction with ColegauCymru)
  • Providing training for various staff within the FE colleges
  • Advising and supporting class representative structures in Welsh FE colleges
  • Various other project aims and objectives that will support student engagement activities within the FE colleges

Six FE colleges have just recently been selected to pilot the project.  These six colleges are as follows:

  • Bridgend College
  • Coleg Glan Hafren
  • Ystrad Mynach College
  • Coleg Gwent
  • Coleg Powys
  • Neath Port Talbot College

My role will be to work very closely with the selected six, as well as work with the other eighteen FE colleges throughout Wales.

It’s a huge project but I am really looking forward to the challenge, as this is a really exciting time for the FE sector in Wales.

Upcoming Events

I am in the process of putting together a calendar of events for the next few months, which will include student governor training (currently scheduled for November), college staff training days and network days for staff, student governors and class reps.

As it is only my second week in the job, the events have not yet been officially published, but please watch this space.

My Background – A bit about me!

I was born and raised in Aberdare in the South Wales valleys and left home at eighteen to study Business Economics at Swansea University.

After graduating, I was elected to serve for two years as the Education Officer of Swansea University Students’ Union.

When my term of office came to an end, I briefly worked for Swansea Metropolitan University Students’ Union, before moving to the University of Glamorgan Students’ Union, where I have spent the last two years working as the Student Representative Coordinator.

I left a couple of weeks ago to start this exciting new role at NUS Wales.
