Today is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, marking the day that the United Nations adopted the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of Others, in 1949.

Although often thought of as confined to history, slavery still exists today in a number of different forms - for example, over 1 million children are trafficked each year for cheap labour or sexual exploitation.

The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery also encourages people to put meaning to the words of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that “no one shall be held in slavery or servitude” through their actions.
