"The scale of these cuts is almost unbelievable. The UK Government confirmed plans to make huge amounts of cuts to teaching spending on universities which is simply unforgivable and will decimate higher education as we know it.

"We were supposed to all be in this together but George Osborne has put himself in a league of his own. These cuts will impact hugely on the lives of countless people across the UK, and particularly those from poorer backgrounds.

Stand up against the cuts on Saturday

“Students are members of society and will be affected by these cuts across their lives. Despite what the UK Government says these cuts are too deep and too fast.

"We believe there is a better way. Students in Scotland are mobilising in protest against these decisions and we will be marching alongside thousands in Edinburgh on Saturday at the STUC’sThere Is a Better Way  demonstration and in even greater numbers at our national demonstration in London on 10 November.

“These cuts to universities combined with Lord Browne’s proposals for unlimited tuition fees in the rest of the UK, will be hugely damaging to Scotland.

Holding Lib Dems to account

"The UK Government must reject Lord Browne’s proposals. Every Liberal Democrat MP was elected on a pledge to vote against any increase in fees and they must now hold true to their word. If they break their promise it will be a huge betrayal, and one students won’t forget.

“The Scottish Government will now have to implement cuts in Scotland. This is a figure outwith of their control but where they apply those cuts will be critical.

"The Scottish Government must learn from the mistakes the UK Government is intent on making, and protect spending on students, colleges and universities."
