Help students in Guisborough fight cuts to their travel subsidy

Students at Prior Pursglove College in Guisborough were shocked to learn last week that their Council plans to scrap the RAT card. The card, which provides half price bus travel throughout the region to 16-18 year olds, is set to be cut as part of budget changes by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, despite recent campaigns by local students.

Last month, “Get on the Bus,” the NUS national campaign for better travel subsidy and service provision, stopped at Prior Pursglove College to hear the voices of the students most likely impacted by budget cuts to student travel subsidy, such as the ones just proposed by the Redcar & Cleveland Council. The students at Prior Pursglove overwhelmingly support the continuation of this vital travel scheme, with one out of every three students signing petitions against any cuts to it.

Previously, the Redcar & Cleveland Council had insisted that the scheme would be untouched until April, but now they have given just two weeks notice until the final decision is made.

Because of this impending threat, the Union is now calling on all to sign its online petition at https://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/savetherat , which urges the council to avoid cutting this vital lifeline to students.
