Global Student Leadership Summit

On the 18 – 21 September 2012, NUS is hosting a Student Leadership Summit for students from around the globe.  As part of its 90th Birthday celebrations, NUS, in partnership with the European Students’ Union will be hosting an event that will bring together student leaders from around to the work to share, learn and critique global education, sustainability and peace.

The summit is being held to:

  • Provide an opportunity for student leaders to share knowledge and form ideas;
  • Inspire student leaders to take individual or group action on global issues, reinforced through personal action plans for delegates;
  • Form new international relationships, supported through a digital platform for student leaders from across the world to stay in touch, and developed through a twinning scheme for national unions of students;
  • Create a post-summit report, including agreed group charter of values and aspirations, case studies of delegate experiences and stories, findings of any focus groups carried out at the summit, a summary of agreed action, a celebration of the achievements of students across the globe, and trends in global student representation;
  • Produce an online record of the summit;
  • Generate high profile national and international press coverage on the issues of education, sustainability and peace.

The event will be held at the University of East London and we are developing a compelling, insightful and colourful programme to ensure the summit engages and challenges delegates.  We plan to attract world-class speakers on a range of hot topics, themed around access to education, quality of education, internationalism, education for sustainable development, sustainability and peace.

Outline Programme

  • Tuesday 18 September 2012      Welcome
  • Wednesday 19 September 2012     Education and development
  • Thursday 20 September 2012      Education for sustainable development
  • Friday 21 September 2012        Peace and Social Justice

The summit will be digitally live-streamed and recorded, allowing student leaders around the world to watch and participate in real time. After the summit, NUS will publish a report summarising key themes and agreements, a summary of the collective action planned, and an overarching report on the strength of global student representation.

This year is also an important year for Peace One Day, a campaign that is working towards a global truce and on 21 September 2012, a televised Peace One Day concert will take place at the Olympic Stadium, hosted by Sir Elton John and Jude Law.  Students attending the leaders’ summit will appear onstage at the concert at the Olympic Stadium.  On this day NUS UK will be mobilising students up and down the UK in the name of peace, and we ask that students from around the world do the same.

As more information about the event becomes available we will be updating this page – so check back for more information.
