Get to School Campaign

NUS LGBT is in the beginning stages of a new campaign called Get to Schools. NUS LGBT will be teaming up with Schools Out to get further and higher education students involved in running LGBT outreach in schools. The project will aim to train LGBT student groups to go into local high schools and run awareness workshops.

NUS LGBT is launching this project to support the work of Schools Out and other organisations through engaging our many student groups in the efforts to make schools a safe and inclusive environment for LGBT youth.

The hope is that by combating LGBTphobia in schools we will be helping to, in the long term; diminishing those attitudes on our university and college campuses.

This project follows on from some brilliant work that the University of Manchester Students’ Union LGBTQ society has done in two schools in greater Manchester over the past few years.

This work involving schools is also in line with work that is being done by LGBT groups in Europe. Alan Bailey NUS LGBT Officer (Open Place) gained experience of this after attending a conference ran by IGLYO in Bucharest, Romania where he and other delegates ran workshops with groups of Romanian students.

NUS LGBT hopes to run a training event later this year for student groups interested in doing outreach with schools. This training event will aim to prepare students for creating and delivering workshops. A toolkit will also be produced to go along side the training.

If your LGBT student group or Students’ Union is interested in getting involved in this project please contact Alan Bailey, LGBT Officer (Open Place) at alan.bailey@nus.org.uk
