It will be the first time in over 20 years that the event has taken place outside the North West and will attract 1500 delegates, plus around 300 observers, exhibitors and media to North East England.
NUS Annual Conference takes place every spring and it is here that students get to vote on the policy and decide the direction and priorities for the year. It is also where candidates running for the National Executive Council are elected.
Both conferences will take place at The Sage Gateshead in April and run over three days, with an estimated economic impact to the regional economy for each conference of around £1.3 million.
The high-profile conferences attract bright young people, VIP speakers and future leaders from across the UK to engage in serious debate on educational issues and the status of student development.
Wes Streeting, national president of the NUS, said: "NUS is delighted to be holding our Annual Conference in NewcastleGateshead. The Sage Gateshead has shown its commitment to education, community and outreach activities, and the facilities are second to none. I'm sure that our members will enjoy coming here for the next two years."
Jessica Roberts, head of business tourism at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “We’re delighted to have secured the NUS annual conference and the two-year commitment demonstrates a firm belief in our capacity to deliver this showpiece event.
“NewcastleGateshead is renowned for its welcome so we look forward to welcoming today’s bright, young students - tomorrow’s potential future leaders. With five leading universities in North East England, this is an ideal place to live and learn and we hope the estimated 1,500 delegates that attend each conference get a flavour of this.”
