Candles for Rwanda

It has been 15 years since the genocide in Rwanda. To commemorate those who lost their lives, AEGIS students and NUS are asking you to join them in lighting a candle of hope.

In 1994 an estimated one million women, men and children were murdered in 100 days because they were Tutsis. Hutus that opposed the radical government were also killed. The world turned a blind eye and failed to protect people from destruction.

Public figures joined Rwandans to remember the victims and express support for the survivors in a hundred day event, which began in the national stadium in Rwanda’s capital Kigali on 7 April.

Light a candle

Ten thousand candles were lit in the shape of the memorial flame in Rwanda with the words “hope” in three languages: Kinyarwandan, English and French.

During the hundred days, from 7 April to 16 July, many more public figures from around the world will participate in this meaningful event. Join in – light up the world with hope for Rwanda. You can leave a message  or upload a video of your own candle lighting.

If you can, we also ask you to make a donation   to support widows and children whose lives were torn apart in 1994, as well as to continue the educational work of the Kigali Memorial Centre, which serves as a permanent memorial for those were killed: there to ensure that genocide will never recur in Rwanda. When you make a donation, a candle will be lit in your name and placed at the Kigali Memorial Centre.
