Both organisations have issued advice to students as they prepare to return to university for the start of term. Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Sussex, Warwick, Aberdeen, Bath and Bournemouth are just some of the universities with exams starting in the next few weeks.

Stuart Wartalski, Endsleigh spokesperson said,

“Many students will be making their way back to university by road this weekend ahead of the start of term. With severe weather conditions predicted for this weekend and onwards, I would urge students to take extra care when driving as roads look set to be dangerous and congested.

“Students often own older vehicles so it is doubly important they make the necessary checks before setting off. These include checking for cracks in the windscreen, tyre pressure and oil and water levels. And of course make sure you check travel reports ahead of departure.”

Ben Whittaker, NUS Vice President for Welfare said:

“Taking exams is always a stressful time for students and unfortunately it looks as if the winter weather is now going to add to that strain. If you’ve an exam the next day, think carefully about how best to travel and allow plenty of extra time as you simply won’t want the panic of thinking you’ll be late. Drivers need to take particular care on the roads and if you’re relying on public transport, make sure you keep up to date with the latest travel information.”

Endsleigh, the UK’s number one student insurance provider, has offered the following top tips for student drivers to try and reduce the risk of accidents on the road:

  • If driving a long distance try and take a break every two hours;
  • Check that your tyres, in-car heating and lights are in good working condition;
  • Make sure you have anti-freeze in the car;
  • Ensure there is warm clothing and/or blankets in the car;
  • Extend your journey time in order to drive carefully in adverse weather;
  • Plan your journey to avoid smaller roads if possible;
  • Remember in adverse weather conditions breaking distances are at least doubled.
