The race is on: sporty fashion

With the Olympic clock ticking ever closer to the main event, there’s no escape from sports – not even in your wardrobe!

This spring is all about channelling your inner athlete through sports luxe, and there’s no need to break a sweat with this foolproof guide to the look.

First, some dos and don’ts to help you look just right, and to avoid verging on the Jimmy Saville-esque:

Do

  • Combine trends and go for pastel coloured sportswear – like lilac Converse or a pale yellow crop top
  • Wear as a night time look: a body-con dress with neon contour lines is sure to look racy
  • Nod to the trend with subtle accessories like sunnies or a visor. Or even embrace your inner 90s kid and grab a statement bumbag!

Don’t

  • Go for a complete sportswear outfit. Looking like you’re actually on the way to the gym is not good a look.
  • Be afraid! Sportswear can be tricky to pull off but if you’re sceptical just stick to the odd sporty update to your wardrobe, rather than a complete revamp.

Now that you’ve (obviously) been convinced to dive into sports luxe, here are some cheap and cheerful ways to get your hands on the essentials for this tricky trend:

  1. Get your hands on the basics. Plimsoles and mock Converse trainers are available pretty cheaply in most high street stores and can usually be found for just a few pounds in Primark.
  2. Update what you’ve already got. A simple shorts and vest combo can be given a sporting edge by popping on a baseball cap or by pairing it with a pastel coloured sports bag.
  3. Use items from other trends to make the look. Patterned trousers and coloured chinos, as well as crop tops and body-con dresses, can all be worn to channel this trend.

And finally a quick guide to the best shops to score those sporty items:

  • eBay: The online store is not only great for this trend, but fab for clothes in general! If you look hard enough you could bag yourself some great designer or sports labels at stupidly low prices. Plus, you can type in exactly what it is you want and wait for the search results to produce your dream items; you won’t find that in Topshop!
  • Boohoo.com: Staying with the online shops, Boohoo has everything laid out for you, with a sports luxe collection giving you all the best pieces to build a sporty look. And not to mention some very reasonable prices.
  • River Island: When you’re browsing through the high street, absolutely pop into RI, with a cute collection of vest tops and casual trousers you can look effortlessly chic by grabbing from their rails.

Now on your marks, get set... and GO GO GO!
