Student Footprints Audit Handbook

Carbon management not only saves our atmosphere from unnecessary pollution but can save you money on your bills too!

There are many benefits of getting energy-wise and this webpage will give you the starting tools you need to identify areas in your university / college, workplace or home that can be improved and how to implement those improvements.

This material was used throughout the two Student Footprint Project's phases and includes training presentations and sample audit reports.

Benefits of carbon management:

  • Choosing to walk or cycle any shorter distances you may need to travel will reduce carbon emissions, air pollution and noise.  It will also increase your fitness levels and save you money!
  • Eat seasonal food – it reduces amount of energy required in fertilisers and storage to grow out of season; and eating local produce reduces the food’s mileage.
  • Turning down the thermostat by just 1oC can save 5 – 10% of the heating bill in a home.  And programming it efficiently to be less active at night and when you are out the house can save a further 10 – 15%!
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Recycle as much packaging as possible; reduce waste by only buying what you need and reuse items such as shopping bags.

Our Carbon Ambassador training involved various presentations and discussions regarding common good and bad practices, looking at energy management as a whole including various scenarios the volunteers could come across while auditing their campus or a community organisation and looking at simple ways to improve energy efficiency in the home and workplace.

It will also include training on how to calculate carbon consumption and the costs that go along with it and simple things they could look out for whilst carrying out an audit.

This presentation provides information on how to calculate your carbon consumption.

After the audit took place in a community organisation or on the campus, a report was written to show areas of good and bad practice and key recommendations on how to improve carbon usage. Click here for a sample audit report.

If you would like pointers for things to look out for in your home, on campus or in the workplace, please look at the following documents which highlight what you can look out for: Document 1: audit checklist  and Document 2: with recommendations.
