Exclusive Kid British Interview

In October, Kid British will be touring UK students' union venues as part of uLive.

The band's debut single ‘Our House is Dadless’, a Madness sampling tale of modern UK living, was blasted out heavily on the Radio 1 playlist this summer.

Kid British talk to NUS about the upcoming uLive tour, Manchester’s best band and Boris Johnson…

How do you feel about the upcoming uLive tour?

We're dying to get back out on the road after the festival season is over and we've been told by "The King Blues" who have previously done the uLive tour that its a really wicked tour to do.

Chris Moyles regularly played 'Our House is Dadless' on his breakfast show and it was named Record of the Week on BBC Radio 1's Scott Mills show. What was it like to have the support of Radio 1?

Yeah he would play it once and then play it again straight afterwards so it was getting two spins on his show alone each day. It’s a proper buzz to hear your song playing on a station which you love yourself.

How did you feel supporting bands like The Enemy and The Specials?

For us they were two of our best experiences to date. ‘The Enemy’ tour was our first major tour and we learnt the ropes on that one and they are a top bunch of lads. Supporting "The Specials" was very surreal; it was so good to see a group in their 30th year tear down the stage better than most bands today.

The Specials have publicly endorsed you and have said very kind words about the band, what does this mean to you as musicians?

People started to compare us to The Specials and none of us had really ever listened to them so when the comparisons started we went and did a little research. It was weird because their natural vibe seems to be something we also have without knowing it. For Lynval Golding to ask us to support them was amazing and he has recently played guitar on two of our songs. It's a good feeling to get recognition from a legendary band; we must be doing something right.

Your album is called 'It was this or football'. How true is that sentiment? Are we talking about professional, Sunday league or just a kick about with your mates?

Haha professional…I wish. Adio actually had a few trials at various teams as a youth player though. The album name was more of a play on words. "It was this or football" meaning when your growing up you dream about doing the two of those things to escape the everyday 9-5 scenario but we are more on the ‘kick about with your mates’ level.

Which bands do you love and hate?

There are many bands I love but bands that I hate are the ones that look down on people and think they are better than you because they are in a band. If you take that away from them, they are the same as everyone else and they are usually the people who disappear quickest in the industry.

What was the greatest football song ever released?

John Barnes Liverpool Rap even though I am a Manchester United fan, it’s too funny along with the video.

How would you describe your sound?

Right now I would describe our sound as underrated but, in general, it’s pop with Ska, Hip-Hop, Reggae all with a hint of social commentary.

You recently topped a poll of Manchester's best band. Firstly, can you believe it? Secondly, how do you think Liam Gallagher feels about that?

To be noticed in your hometown is the best feeling man, I don't know how we did it still being a fairly new band but I doubt Liam will have a problem with it and if he does tell him to come see me, I'm local haha.

Alexis Petridis of The Guardian recently gave you a good review and said that you could become a big band if you're given the time. What are your thoughts on the reviews you have been getting? And do you agree that bands aren't given enough time to grow?

See - Alexis Petridis - he is the definition of a journalist there, someone that listens to you for what you are with an open mind and not someone who wants to compare you to their favourite band which you sound nothing like. Its a tough industry, people get dropped because they did not have quick success but, in my eyes, Peter Andre's "Mysterious Girl" was released three times before in went to number one! I believe if a good band keeps knocking at the door they will eventually be let in.

How did the guerrilla gigs on the Tube come about and did you really sing directly to Boris Johnson?

We were promoting our "Leave London" EP which had "She Will Leave" and "Lost In London" on it and we thought “let's take it back to basics, let’s busk”. It was possibly the coldest day ever but we had a top laugh. We did about 10 stations and, when we reached Westminster, Boris Johnson was waiting for a tube so we whipped out our...guitars and went for it, we think he thought it was a protest at first but then he realised and nodded his head.

Kid British will be touring UK students' union venues, starting in Liverpool on Friday 9 October.
