In-house and EIRIS screening
The Ethical & Environmental team carry out a standard in-house ethical screen in most instances, but may request an EIRIS screen as part of this process. Ethical screens will typically be done on the day they are requested.
Approvals
If the screening does not find any significant ongoing ethical issues or results in an overall risk score of 4 or less, then the Ethical & Environmental team will approve the discounter.
Significant ongoing ethical issues
If the screening finds one or more any significant ongoing ethical issue or results in an overall risk score of 5 or more, then the Ethical & Environmental team will inform the NUS Extra joint management team.
The ultimate decision to add a discounter to the card will lay with the NUS Extra joint management. Given NUS Services’ commitment to Constructive Engagement, any decision may dependant on the discounter’s willingness to commit to entering into dialogue over the issues of concern.

Matalan offers students a discount through the NUS Extra card. After allegations of child labour in the cotton growing and harvesting industry section of its supply chain, the Ethical and Environmental Manager, Jamie Agombar met with key people within the Matalan team to discuss the allegations.
On 11 April 2008 NUS Services met with Arcadia to discuss various topics, including labour standards in Arcadia’s supply chain. NUS Services was particularly interested in a number of media reports in relation to labour standards.
McDonald’s offers a discount through the NUS Extra Card. Discount partners on the NUS Extra card are expected to comply with the principles in the NUS and NUS Services joint ethical and environmental statements as well as NUS Services Sound Sourcing guide.
