NUS and Ben & Jerry’s Give Away Ice Cream to Make EU Cows Happier

If you’ve ever been involved with Student Switch Off you’ll know that NUS and Ben & Jerry’s love to work with students to make the world a more sustainable place while giving away loads of ice cream. And so NUS is proud to be supporting Ben & Jerry’s Happy Cow campaign, championing a petition to get legislation passed providing basic levels of welfare for dairy cows across the EU.

Amazingly, despite there being standardised welfare laws for hens and pigs across the EU, cows aren’t protected at all, leading to widespread health problems, poor diet, and little access to pasture. Put more simply: we’ve got a lot of sad cows, and we need to make them happy.

NUS and Ben & Jerry’s are running a competition between 20 students’ unions across the country to see who can generate the greatest number of Facebook shares of the petition. Your union could win loads of free ice cream, or even a trip for three to visit B&J’s Caring Dairy in Holland.

So – share the petition and we’ll present all the names to the EU commissioner along with the Agricultural Minister of EU Member states at the end of the campaign to show the widespread support for the welfare legislation. You get ice cream, and the dairy cows get happy. Good luck!
