Free Maxwell Dlamini

We were honoured to hear from Maxwell Dlamini, the outgoing President of the Swaziland NUS at national conference this year. Sadly we have to report that Maxwell, now Secretary General of the Swaziland Youth Congress was detained last week and has been charged with sedition (actions that are deemed to tend toward insurrection against the government).

We are showing the Home Office the yellow card – and calling on them to improve their treatment of those students from across the world who choose to study here – in particular by calling on them to work with NUS, UUK and UKBA to establish a code of conduct setting out basic standards in working with international students.

NUS is calling on the government’s Education Secretary, Michael Gove to reverse the decision to radically review A-level qualifications. The government is once again rushing through reforms without thought on the impact they will have on students. From September 2013, A-levels will be more linear, removing January assessments and limiting students’ right to a resit.
