Moving to a new area is never easy, many students will have the advantage of living in Halls of Residence but it’s still a good idea to suss out the local area!
Not only will getting to know your new surroundings help you find a house in a nice, safe, area in your second year but will also help you to feel a part of the local community.
Criminals recognise that new students are not likely to be so in touch with their surroundings and can use this vulnerability. Make such you are one step ahead by knowing your local area.
5 Tips on getting to know your local area
- Check out the internet or guidebooks before you arrive at University or college. These will help you get a feel for the place in advance. Also, check your local crime rate – you can do that HERE
- Take a walk with friends - or even a city tour - and get a feel for the area; speak to other students to see what advice they have to offer.
- Ask your SU if the local police hold drop-ins – stop by and meet your local copper!
- Meet your neighbour
- Get involved in local volunteering projects. These can help you to get a better grasp of the community.
