Your Stuff

Computers and Data

As a student your computer is likely to be one of your most valued possessions, not simply because of how much they cost to replace but also because of the hours of work you will have stored and the number of passwords and usernames you have logged!

  • Find this useful?

It’s a good idea to lock it in cupboard when you’re not using it.

If you need to carry a laptop around with you, don’t draw attention to it. Putting it in a rucksack rather than a computer case will save you from looking like a geek and mean you’re not drawing attention to the expensive equipment.

The dangers of the...Library

Many thefts happen in the library. Never leave your laptop (or belongings) to nip to the loo or for a coffee. If you plan to use your laptop in the library or in lectures why not get a Laptop Lock that will allow you to lock it to the desk?

Back Up

Back up all your work regularly and always keep disks separate from your computer.

If you’re ordering off the internet, then make sure the company has a secure server. (You will know the site is secure if you see a padlock at the bottom right of the screen.)

Make sure your private information stays private; keep PINs, passwords and personal financial information safe. Don’t send your bank details by e-mail or store them on your computer.
