Bike Security

Do you love to ride your bicycle? If so then this page is for you. 100,000 bikes are stolen every year, so you can’t be too protective. Chains are easily cut. D-locks or combination locks are best, but a good bicycle shop or DIY store can advise you. You could even use two locks for extra security (and to make thieves think it’s not worth trying to steal your bike).

5 tips on securing your bike

  • Don’t’ be a loser, get a D-lock. Whilst slightly more expensive than regular chains a good D-lock will save you in the long run!
  • Always lock both wheels and keep the lock off the ground. This makes it harder to break.
  • Park your bike in open, public places. Designated bike racks exist at most Universities - check out if they have CCTV, and make sure it’s not hidden out of view.
  • Take away any extras like lights and helmets.
  • Have your bike frame security-marked with your name and postcode. Your university security department, your SU or your local police station should be able to help you with this. Register it with www.immobilise.com
