If you are in university or college accommodation, you may be on a ‘license’ rather than a tenancy. This means that if you pay a deposit your university or college is not legally bound to protect this deposit.

However, if you are in a privately owned or managed accommodation block it’s likely you will be on an assured shorthold tenancy, which means you are legally entitled to have your deposit protected.
