Student Accommodation

Applying for accommodation

First things first, you need to decide where you are going to live and when to start looking. If you are going into your first year, you will have been sent application forms by your institution, provided it has accommodation. It’s important that you return this by the deadline to make sure you get your desired place.

Some halls also allow you to choose who you live with, or identify characteristics you have so that they can match you up with compatible flat or roommates. For example:

  • Single sex accommodation
  • Whether you are a smoker
  • Social interests or hobbies
  • Subject or course
  • Age range
  • Ensuite accommodation

However lots of halls and student accommodation allocate people to rooms randomly, which can be a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, especially if you are new to the area. Sometimes this can not work out though. Check out our section on what to do if relationships with your flatmates should break down
