Protect yourself from crime

According to the Home Office, one in three students will be a victim of crime, with mugging, vehicle-related theft and burglary the most common crimes committed. But there is something you can do about it.

NUS is supporting the government’s latest plans to crackdown on burglary, and will be receiving funding to help prevent crime against students.

The work will focus on groups of students who are vulnerable at different points in the year: for example, during exams, at Christmas, or when they are moving into new accommodation.

“Students are particularly vulnerable to burglary, because many of them spend long periods away from home during holiday times or exam periods," says NUS President Wes Streeting.

Do your bit

But you can still do your bit to help reduce the risk of being targeted. Whether you live in halls or private accommodation, it’s important to look after yourself and your belongings. Here are a few tips to keep you and your belongings safe:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and who is close by. If someone is walking too close to you, cross over or stop and wait for them to pass.
  • try not to use your phone when out in the street. Muggers will take any opportunity to catch you off guard;
  • don’t go out on your own in the dark. Try and arrange to walk with a friend, even if you are just popping to the shop. Stay in groups on a night out and don’t go home on your own in a taxi. If you do leave on your own, let someone know where you’re going;
  • park in busy or well lit areas, close to CCTV cameras when possible.
  • remove all valuables from your car – especially at night;
  • use a steering lock and/or immobiliser;
  • lock doors and windows when leaving your accommodation;
  • keep valuable items out of sight;
  • get a burglar alarm fitted. This will act as a deterrent;
  • set your lights to a timer. Seeing lights come on and off gives the impression someone is in.

Insure yourself against crime

Finally, protect yourself with insurance. In the event that something should happen, insurance can give you peace of mind – knowing that items can be replaced; you can move on quickly and enjoy your time at uni!
