Look after yourself and your friends
While you're having the time of your life it's easy to forget to look after yourself and your friends. Would you know what to do if one of your friends had an accident? Or drank so much they passed out?
Every year, a significant number of students are treated for injuries ranging from fractures and sprains to alcohol poisoning. Not all of these are avoidable, but by following our top tips you can minimise the risks and perhaps even save a life.
Sound advice from St. John Ambulance
St. John Ambulance is the UK's leading First Aid and care provider. (Yes you're right; we're the ones you see at providing First Aid at festivals, and football matches but we also do a whole lot more!) So why not check out our advice below.
Register with your campus doctor
Register with the campus doctor right away! If you have a long-term condition like asthma or diabetes visit the Doc to make sure you can continue getting the medication you need.
Take it easy with alcohol
Take it easy especially where alcohol is concerned. Don't go out drinking on an empty stomach but if you do drink too much, make sure you have lots of water so you don't become dehydrated.
Don't ignore little cuts
Little cuts may seem unimportant but can get infected if they're not taken care of...stock up on your supply of plasters to take care of those nicks and scrapes.
Get to know your new surroundings
Do you know if there's a defibrillator on your campus? Or who knows how to use it? Do you know where you could find a First Aid kit if you needed to? Don't hope someone else will know - make it your mission to find out for yourself.
Learn what to do in an emergency
You can sign up for a First Aid course in your local area or do one through your student LINKS society. Not only will you learn how to save a life - but you'll also have a lot of fun in the process.
