Don't be a victim of crime

Let’s face it, insurance is one of the duller things in life, but given how keen burglars are to target both halls of residence and off campus properties, it’s important to make sure you’ve got cover to protect you.

According to the home office, young people aged 16 – 24 are three times more likely to be victims of burglary than people in other age groups and one in three students is a victim of crime.

Take a second to think about how much you own – you might not think it’s that much, but if you add up the cost of everything you have – laptop, iPod, television, mobile, clothes, etc, it’s probably far more than you think.

Research by Endsleigh Insurance Services Ltd  shows that the average student owns belongings worth over £6,000 - that’s a lot of money to find if you need to replace everything, but think how lost you’d be if you didn’t have your laptop to check facebook  or your mobile to text your friends.

Insurance isn’t as expensive as you might think, you can get insurance with Endsleigh from just £16 a year – that’s less per month than a Starbucks coffee (and lasts much longer!)

There are flexible online cover options too, so you can pick and mix your cover depending on what you need – you can even just cover a £400 laptop from only £24 for the whole year, so it’s no wonder they’re recommended by NUS.

What’s important to remember is that as a student you need to get insurance that’s designed for you and your lifestyle. Some students are under the impression that they’re covered under their parents insurance - this is not always the case and there are often many limitations to being insured this way.

By taking out insurance designed especially for students, you know that you’ll be covered for things like walk in theft (theft when burglars haven’t forced doors or windows), which many non-student policies don’t cover.

  • If you’re in halls of residence be careful who you let in, or who comes in after you – they may not necessarily live there
  • Register your valuables on www.immobilise.co.uk, so if they’re recovered by the police, they can be tracked back to you
  • Don’t leave your valuables on display in your home or in your car
  • Keep a list of emergency numbers handy – just in case you need them
  • Always get a licensed taxi home at night, or travel home with friends
