The Awards were presented across 13 categories including Endsleigh Student of the Year, Campaign a Year and the presentation of the first Lifetime Contribution Award.

The NUS Awards, held in partnership with Endsleigh Insurance recognise the inspirational work carried out by individual students, student media and students’ unions across the UK.

The winners were selected from almost 200 nominations representing 60 students’ unions from across the UK.

The final Award of the evening, the Endsleigh Student of the Year Award recognises an individual who, in the face of adversity, has made a significant contribution to fellow students and the wider community. Richard Amos, of National Star College Students’ Union, has cerebral palsy, is a wheelchair user, and requires support from others to meet many of his needs.  His achievements include being a students’ union representative, advocate, trainer and college ambassador. Richard has also developed a community advocacy service to support young people with disabilities.

Helen Sexton, Chief Executive and Principal at National Star College said:

"We are delighted that Rich has been awarded Endsleigh Student of the Year. Rich is a tremendous ambassador for the National Star College and his fellow students and really deserves the recognition this Award will bring. Richard is a sheer delight to work with and our congratulations go out to him."

This year also saw the presentation of the first Lifetime Contribution to former NUS President Fred Jarvis.  Since being elected President in 1952, Fred went on join the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and become General Secretary in 1975.

On receiving the Award Fred Jarvis said:

“I am honoured, to say the least, to receive this Award.  I have fond memories of my time as NUS President and it has been a great pleasure to continue to be part of NUS, its development and progress”.

NUS President Wes Streeting said:

“This year’s NUS Awards are a testament to the sterling work of students across the UK that goes on every day.  The commitment and dedication of the finalists and winners is a credit to students and the student movement”.
