National Climate March 2008

National Climate March - 06/12/2008

Duration: 1 day

Join NUS on the National Climate March and pressure governments around the globe to take action on climate change.

NUS will be joining the National Climate March as it leaves from Speaker's Corner, Hyde Park at midday on Saturday 6 December and heads towards Parliament  Square.

Speakers on the day will include Nick Clegg (leader Liberal Democrat Party), Caroline Lucas (leader, Green party), Michael Meacher (ex-environment minister) and George Monbiot (Honorary President, Campaign against Climate Change).

Cutting carbon emissions

"Whilst the government has committed to cutting UK carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, we need to ensure the actions reflect the words, and that plans to open new coal mines or build new runways are met with mass resistance," says Susan Nash, Co-convenor of the society and citizenship zone.

"Our members are long standing activists in the fight against climate change and this march is another chance for us to mobilize and demand a green, more sustainable future."

Say NO

The march will say NO to a third runway at Heathrow and further aviation expansion, NO new coal - no new coal power stations like Kingsnorth and NO to the expansion of agrofuels - with negative impacts on forests, the climate and world food supply.

It will say YES, however, to a renewable energy revolution and the creation of green jobs.

Further details about the march can be found on the Campaign Against Climate Change website.
