It’s important that students are empowered as tenants. After all, we’ll most likely be renting in the private rented sector long after we graduate.
We’re anxious to represent students’ needs in terms of housing and their position in their communities. We’re feeding into government consultations regarding planning and licensing, and laying down two early day motions in parliament. The first (speeding up the return of student deposits by educational establishments) calls for universities to follow the same rules as other landlords and return bonds in a timely manner. The second (protecting tenant deposits in the private rented sector) looks at the tenancy protection scheme and the limit of £25,000.
How you can get involved
You can help us by writing to or visiting your MP and asking them to sign up to two early day motions on the subject. We've created a model letter for you, so all you need to do is drop it into an email, add yours and their name and click send.
We’re also keen to hear ideas from students and students’ unions as we plan our work, so please add your responses to this article.
