National Executive Committee
The National Executive Committee (NEC) is elected by our membership to be its representatives. The NEC is responsible for managing the affairs of NUS, and co-ordinates our campaigns, services and training.
The NEC meets six or seven times a year. It consists of nine full-time officers, 12 part-time executive members, two part-time LGBT officers, and a part-time International Students’ officer.
The presidents of NUS Scotland and UCMC (NUS Wales) and the convenor of NUS-USI (Northern Ireland) are also members of the National Executive.
NUS constitution
The NUS constitution sets out the aims, objectives and democratic structures of NUS, ensuring the open and fair running of the National Union. It is also the core tool of NUS as a membership organisation, setting out the rights and responsibilities of constituent members.

NEC zone committees
The NEC zone committees are responsible for planning and delivering the majority our work.
Zone committees implement the decisions of National Conference and their management teams are responsible for day-to-day finance and management issues.
The zones are:
Special regions
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are known as ‘special’ regions of NUS and have autonomous policy-making powers. They each hold a conference, where one (or more) sabbatical officers is elected and policy is set.
The presidents of NUS Scotland and UCMC/NUS Wales and the NUS-USI Northern Ireland Convenor also sit on the NEC.
English regions
For democratic purposes, NUS in England is divided into four regions: North, South, Midlands and East, and London.
The regional teams work to develop strong and active students’ unions in further and higher education. Each region of NUS holds three conferences a year.
