Student loans

If you fulfil the residency criteria and are studying a full-time higher education course you might qualify for help with living costs. This funding is available whether you chose to study in Scotland or elsewhere in the UK.

The amount you get will depend on your personal circumstances and whether you’ll be living at home while you are studying.

SAAS will look at how much money you and/or your parents/partner earn. They will decide how much you or your parents/partner are expected to pay and how much SAAS will give you. The maintenance award is called a student loan and you need to repay it after you have graduated.

If you’re under 25 and studying in Scotland, you may be able to apply for a young students’ bursary from SAAS of up to £2,575.

The amount you get is based on how much money your family earns. If they earn £18,820 or less, you will get the full amount, however, if your family earns £33,330 or above then you will not get a bursary and will have to take a student loan instead. Your bursary is given to you instead of a student loan and you can take the remaining amount (up to the total amount shown above) in a student loan. You’re not expected to repay the young students’ bursary
If you get a young students’ bursary you might also get an additional loan of up to £590. If your parents’ income is £17,400 or less you will get the full amount, however, if it is above £21,210 you will not get the additional loan.
