We have developed the Sound* brand as a focus for our ethical and environmental initiatives. Sound* has been developed to promote and reward good practice among our member students’ unions and our supplier base.
We also use Sound* to promote this activity directly to students.
Sound* Environmental Impact Awards
The Sound* Environmental Impact Awards is an environmental accreditation scheme with an awards element designed specifically for students’ unions. The scheme seeks to encourage, nurture, reward and celebrate good practice in students’ unions.
2009/10
The 2009/10 scheme has now launched. As part of our mission for continuous improvement the benchmark has been increased again. We hope that ninety unions will rise to the environmental challenge this year!
2008/09
For 2008/09 a higher benchmark than in 2007/08 has been introduced and there are some major changes this year to build upon progress made in year's one and two. Seventy-nine students' unions entered the programme in 2008/09.
2007/08
In 2007/08 a slightly higher benchmark was introduced to encourage continual improvement, and sixty-seven students’ unions entered the programme.
2006/07
In 2006/07 fifty-one students’ unions entered the programme.

Sound* Ethical Choice
Sound* Ethical Choice is at the forefront of ethical purchasing via the grading of suppliers against both ethical and environmental criteria.
It allows students to make their purchases from an informed perspective by advertising companies that have achieved a First Grade through our Ethical & Environmental Committee's assessments.
134 stores across the UK take part in the Sound* Ethical Choice campaign, promoting a wide range of suppliers and products with a range of specially developed promotional materials, primarily used in-store.
